China has warned Ukraine that their bilateral relations could be damaged by Kiev's designation of many Chinese companies as "international war sponsors".
The warning was communicated to Ukraine last month at a meeting of China's ambassador in Kiev with senior Ukrainian government officials. Beijing has close ties to Moscow and has refrained from criticizing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but has also said that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected. China has also offered to help mediate the war.
Ukraine, on the other hand, has listed 48 global companies, including 14 from China, as "international war sponsors" whose business activities it says indirectly aid or contribute to Russia's war effort.
Prior to the launch of Russia's invasion on February 24, 2022, China was Ukraine's largest trading partner and remains an important consumer of Ukrainian wheat, sunflower oil and iron ore.
