The ambassadors of the 31 member states of NATO have decided to continue the mandate of the secretary general of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, for another year.

According to this decision, which was taken at the meeting of the North Atlantic Council held in Brussels on July 4, Stoltenberg will remain at the head of the alliance until October 1, 2024.

This decision put an end to speculations regarding the possible choice of Stoltenberg's successor at the head of NATO.

Stoltenberg has thanked the member states for the trust given.

" I am honored by the decision of NATO allies to continue my mandate as secretary general. The transatlantic link between Europe and North America has ensured our freedom and security for nearly 75 years, and in a much more dangerous world, this alliance is more important than ever before," he said .

There have been efforts to reach an agreement between the allies for the new secretary general until the NATO summit, which will be held in Vilnius on July 11 and 12. But, taking into account the global situation and the challenges that the Euro-Atlantic area is facing, it has been decided that Stoltenberg's mandate will be extended for another year.

The decision to appoint the head of NATO is made by consensus of 31 member states.

This is the fourth time that Stoltenberg's mandate has been extended, and in 2024 it will be ten years since he will be at the head of the alliance.

Earlier this year, Stoltenberg declared that he was not interested in remaining in the post of secretary general after his last term expired. He had already been appointed president of the Central Bank of Norway.

But now he has accepted the decision of the NATO countries and will remain at the head of the alliance until October next year. Allies have thanked Stoltenberg for his leadership, for his commitment to maintaining transatlantic unity at a time when the world is facing one of the most unprecedented security challenges since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last February.
