Putin-Trump meeting in Budapest? Peter Szijjarto: It has not been canceled, we

The United States has not canceled the peace summit with Russia scheduled for Budapest, only the timing has been postponed, but preparations against fake news are still underway, said Peter Szijjarto, minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, after his meeting with his American counterpart in Washington on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Szijjarto reported after his meeting with Marco Rubio that the United States has not given up on its efforts to organize the peace summit, the only issue in this regard is timing, as they would like the meeting to bring a real result that is reassuring for everyone and can bring about long-term sustainable peace in Central Europe.

"So it's not a question of whether they want a peace summit. It's not a question of whether there will be one. The only question is when the preparations will be brought to a stage where the summit can definitely end with something positive in terms of peacemaking," he said.

According to him, this also means that preparations are continuing.

"I mean, the fake news, the rumors that the negotiations were stopped here, that the preparations were abandoned, and that was all. This is not true, this is a lie, this is fake news," he continued.

"Preparations are underway. The two foreign ministers are in contact with each other and will continue the work that will lead to a successful peace summit," he added, adding that this was "very good news for those in favor of peace, but bad news for those in favor of war."

"There is no doubt that if we manage to prepare the peace summit, it will be held in Budapest. So, this does not even arise as an issue, the Americans continue to appreciate and highly value Hungary's pro-peace policy (...) They appreciate the fact that Hungary is trying to contribute in every possible way to establishing peace in Central Europe," he said.

"They treat us as an absolute friend and ally, and that's true on a governmental, institutional level, and also in a personal sense. So my colleague also said that the President of the United States considers the Prime Minister of Hungary to be his absolute friend and ally, and they look forward to the Prime Minister's visit here to Washington in early November," he added.

Peter Szijjarto emphasized that Viktor Orban's planned visit was also discussed and underlined that Donald Trump relies on the Hungarian Prime Minister's knowledge regarding the war in Ukraine.

"We are important to Americans in this regard, Marco Rubio has made that clear to me," he said.

He also announced that during the visit they will sign a major agreement that will take Hungarian-American economic and energy cooperation to a new dimension, the details of which have been clarified.

He explained that Hungary is interested in expanding its nuclear capacity and, in doing so, they rely on the United States and American technology. He recalled that in the future they intend to purchase American nuclear fuel elements in addition to Russian ones, and are also discussing the possible purchase of small modular nuclear reactors.

"In addition, there will be an industrial defense, security-type part and a classic economic investment chapter of this cooperation program," he informed.
