Berlin, Paris, London express support for Kiev, while presenting their proposal for a peace plan to US Vice President Vance, while Zelensky has appealed for no territorial concessions.
Berlin, London and Paris have been in feverish contact with Kiev in the last hours before the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska. In a joint plan to draw up a roadmap for a lasting peace in Ukraine, which they presented to US Vice President JD Vance, they make it clear that there can be no peace negotiations in Ukraine without Ukraine.
Late Saturday evening, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom, Finland and the European Commission issued a joint statement, in which they welcome Donald Trump's efforts for peace but with some conditions.
"We remain strongly in favor of the principle that international borders should not be changed by force," they declare.
Regarding Trump's moves, they say that only an approach that combines active diplomacy, support for Ukraine, and pressure on Russia can yield results.
Fear that Europeans will be left out
As the Wall Street Journal reveals, the Europeans (Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer and Friedrich Merz) categorically reject Putin's proposal to recognize the entire Donbas region in Eastern Ukraine as Russian territory in exchange for a ceasefire and negotiations. They consider a ceasefire a prerequisite for negotiations on possible territorial concessions.
At the same time, European allies are seeking security guarantees for Ukraine, including the possibility of future NATO membership. According to what has been revealed in international and German media, territorial changes can only occur on a reciprocal basis: if Kiev withdraws troops from one region, Moscow will have to do the same in another.
According to the New York Times, citing two senior European officials, Europeans have made it clear that they will not accept a “second Yalta,” like when the Americans and Russians “divided” Europe toward the end of World War II. Great Britain also attended the Yalta Conference. Europeans also fear that Trump and Putin could reach a deal in Alaska that leaves Ukraine and the Europeans out.
Berlin is currently keeping a low profile regarding the Trump-Putin meeting.
