House Republicans moved swiftly today to defeat a Democratic-led effort to force a vote overturning President Donald Trump's sweeping reciprocal tariffs.
Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks had planned to force a vote as early as today to end Trump's latest round of tariffs, just hours after they went into effect.
Republicans have previously taken steps to prevent Democrats, namely Meeks, from forcing a vote to end Trump's tariffs by inserting the language into a preliminary spending bill.
Democrats thought they found a loophole that would allow them to force a vote, as that language only specified Trump's tariffs from earlier this year.
But the Republicans' new language shuts down any vote related to the tariffs on April 2. Notably, the language only lasts until September 30 of this year — meaning Democrats could try to force a vote after that.
As President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs on countries take effect today, some Republicans say they are concerned about the impact the tariffs will have on their voters. But they continue to stand behind the president.
Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia said she is concerned about the impact on consumer prices and job losses, but is willing to have confidence in the president's approach.
"I support the president, he will have faith that, in the end, things will be better and better for the American worker ," said the West Virginia Republican.
Senator John Curtis of Utah said he is concerned about anything that raises prices for his constituents while telling CNN he is learning more about the actual impact.
“You know, the complexity of tariffs on prices is profound. We all know that. There are conflicting opinions. We’ll see. I’m concerned about anything that increases prices. Obviously everyone is very sensitive to that right now ,” he said.
Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt is a supporter of the president's tariff policy, arguing that the US is responding to unfair treatment. Asked if he is concerned about the potential increased costs for Missouri farmers from US tariffs imposed on China, Schmitt said: " No, what I'm concerned about is that we haven't had a president willing to stand up to China in decades."
