The commander of Italy's Military Geographical Institute, General Roberto Vanacci, has been dismissed from his post after the uproar caused by a book of his judged to be racist and homophobic.
In his work entitled "The World Upside Down", which was published on August 10, the 54-year-old Vanacci, a former commander of the elite Parachute Corps and until recently commander of the Military Geographical Institute, is presented as "the successor of Julius Caesar ". During his career, General Vanacci served in Somalia, Rwanda, Afghanistan and Libya.
"Dear homosexuals, you are not normal", he says, among other things, according to parts of the book published in the Italian media. The Italian general also condemns the "controversial rules of integration and tolerance, imposed by minorities".
He also attacks the black volleyball player, Paola Enogou, who competes in the Italian national team, saying that Enogou "is of Italian nationality, but it is obvious that her features do not represent Italianness".
On Thursday, Defense Minister Guido Croceto, a close ally of Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, condemned Vanacci's "illusions", saying in a statement that the general "expresses views that discredit the army and the Constitution".
The Ministry of Defense "will start the prescribed disciplinary procedure", the minister said, emphasizing that he was not "informed about the content of the book, which was not submitted for approval by the military hierarchy".
"I don't understand why I should withdraw for a book in which I express my thoughts without offending anyone," Vanacci told Rette 4 television on Friday.
His remarks sparked a wave of angry reactions from the left, while far-right and far-right MPs remained silent.
