Shooting at military base in Georgia, at least 5 injured

The Fort Stewart military base in Georgia was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after a confirmed shooting incident.

As reported by the spokesman for the military police department of the base, Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko, the authorities confirmed the presence of a gunman, who, after a police operation that lasted about half an hour, was arrested. The information indicates that five wounded soldiers have been taken to the hospital.

The official Facebook page for Fort Stewart-Hunter Air Force Base said "there are reports of casualties and the situation remains active," noting that law enforcement had been on the scene since the lockdown, at 11:04 a.m.

Fort Stewart is one of the largest military installations in the United States, home to the 3rd Mechanized Infantry Division and serving as a training and development center for both active and reserve troops. The base is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah and is home to more than 10,000 people, including soldiers, their families, and civilian personnel.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp stated via the X platform that he is in "close communication" with security forces and expressed his sadness over the incident:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those who serve selflessly. I call on all citizens of Georgia to do the same."
