Extreme heat wave, Spain records over 1,000 deaths in the last two months

More than 1,000 deaths in Spain from the heatwave in the last 2 months, while the last two weeks alone have seen an increase of more than 50% compared to the same period in 2024.

"The exact number of 1,060 deaths represents a 57% increase compared to last year ," the Spanish Ministry of Health said in X, based on estimates from a system called "MoMo" (Modelo de Monitorizacion de la Mortalidad - Mortality Monitoring Model).

This tool, managed by the Carlos III Institute, collects the number of deaths in Spain every day and calculates the deviation of mortality compared to the predicted mortality based on recorded historical data.

It then includes external factors that could explain this deviation. Among these factors are mainly the temperatures recorded by the Spanish Meteorological Service (Aemet).

This system cannot determine the absolute relationship between recorded deaths and climatic conditions, but the figures represent the best estimate of the number of deaths for which the heat wave may be a decisive factor.

In July 2024, the number of deaths whose deaths, based on these criteria, could be attributed to extreme heat was 674. The following month it rose to 1,271.

"The Ministry of Health is developing a campaign on heat waves and the importance of protecting ourselves, because we consider it to be one of the risk factors that has the greatest impact on mortality in this context ," Health Minister Monica Garcia said yesterday in an interview with Spain's RNE radio network.

According to the "MoMo" system, a total of 1,180 deaths can be attributed to heat waves between May 16 and July 13, a very large increase compared to the same period in 2024, when the death toll was 70, the Ministry of Health announced.

The country experienced its warmest June on record, with an average temperature of 23.7 degrees Celsius. Spain, as well as neighboring Portugal, have been hit since Sunday by a second heatwave since the start of summer, which is expected to last at least until the end of the week.
