Two young people have been killed and nine others seriously injured after a serious shooting incident that occurred yesterday at Brown University in the city of Providence, Rhode Island, on the east coast of the United States. All the victims are students of the university, according to the official confirmation of the university's president, Christina Paxton.
According to local authorities and police, a gunman opened fire inside a classroom on the first floor of the Barus & Holley building, which houses the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Physics. The perpetrator, a yet-to-be-identified male, fled the scene on foot and is still being sought. Footage released by security cameras shows him leaving the building, but his face is not visible. According to witnesses, he may have been wearing a gray, military-style mask.
The university immediately issued an emergency alert for students and staff, asking them to stay indoors, lock their doors, and turn off their phones. For hours, the entire campus was cordoned off as security forces searched the area with the support of the FBI, which said it was deploying all its resources to help apprehend the perpetrator. Shell casings were also recovered at the scene, but no technical details were released due to the ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred during a review hour for the final exam in the subject "Principles of Economics". One of the students who was in the class said that she heard several loud shots and saw several students who tried to hide behind the desk to escape the bullets. The classroom where the attack occurred has a capacity of 186 people and is located in one of the most frequented centers of the university.
For hours after the shooting, there was uncertainty about whether the perpetrator had been neutralized or was still active. Mayor Brett Smiley, in a press release, confirmed that the suspect had not been arrested and that there was no information about a second threat. In the meantime, authorities continue the search with about 400 police forces on the ground.
Former US President Donald Trump reacted on his social media account by saying he had been informed of the incident and initially spread the false news that an arrest had been made, only to later deny it. He added that "what a terrible tragedy" and called on Americans to pray for the victims.
The president of Brown University expressed sorrow for the loss of the two students and said that the priority now is to provide support to the families and community of students.
The incident has deeply shocked the American academic community, especially because it took place inside an elite university and in an area that was considered safe. Meanwhile, questions about security at educational institutions in the US are once again at the center of public debate.
