The shooting incident occurred at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Connecticut Avenue, the same hotel where Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in 1981.
The assassination occurred on March 30, 1981, when the perpetrator, John Hinckley Jr., shot Reagan as he was returning to his limousine after a speech inside the hotel.

Reagan survived, but was seriously injured by a bullet that ricocheted off the side of the presidential limousine and struck him in the torso, breaking a rib and puncturing a lung. He was rushed to George Washington University Hospital and released on April 11.
Then-White House spokesman James Brady was also injured in the same incident, as were a Secret Service agent and a Metropolitan Police officer.
Brady suffered brain damage during the attack and was left disabled for the rest of his life. Health problems resulting from his injuries haunted him to the end and contributed to his death in 2014.
The following year, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of mental disorder, but was placed in a high-security ward at St Elizabeth's Hospital until his release in 2016.
A memorial plaque still marks the site of the shooting on the side of the hotel.
How did the armed attack at Trump's White House Correspondents' Dinner happen?

An armed attack occurred during a correspondents' dinner in Washington, while US President Donald Trump was also in the hall.
A gunman attempted to enter the premises of the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, shooting and wounding an officer, before being neutralized and arrested.
The incident occurred as the ceremony had just begun. According to witnesses, an unusual movement near the entrances to the hall was accompanied by gunshots and alarm calls, forcing attendees to jump to the ground and seek protection under tables.
The president and his wife, Melania Trump, who were at the head table, were immediately removed by Secret Service agents, who intervened quickly and in a coordinated manner. Within moments, the room was filled with heavily armed security forces, while guests were ordered to evacuate.
The surrounding area was cordoned off by police, while helicopters monitored the situation from the air. The event is organized annually by the White House Correspondents' Association and brings together important figures from American politics, media and public life.
The suspected perpetrator is Cole Allen, 31, who was detained by authorities. He entered armed with the intent to attack officers. He is considered a lone gunman, and the full motive is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, one person from the law enforcement forces was injured in the shooting and is out of danger.
About two hours after the incident, Trump reacted from the White House, describing the attack as a dangerous act aimed at attacking democratic institutions. He stressed that the incident would not affect his policy decisions, including his stance on Iran.
