The gunman who opened fire at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night has been identified as Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.
Donald Trump called him a "lonely and troubled author."
Allen, who works as a teacher, was arrested after allegedly breaking into the Washington Hilton Hotel and entering the room where about 2,500 guests, including the president and members of the administration, were gathered.
The shooting occurred near the main security checkpoint shortly after 8:30 p.m., while dinner was being served. The gunman reportedly fired and entered the room, wounding a police officer wearing a bulletproof vest.
Washington Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said the man was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and several knives. He also stressed that all evidence indicates this was an isolated incident and there is no broader threat to the public.
After the incident, Trump held a press conference at the White House, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump. The president said he initially thought the noise was from a dropped disc and not gunfire.
Service agents evacuated President Trump from his table at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Cabinet secretaries also left the ballroom, according to witnesses.

Witnesses described scenes of panic inside the hall, with guests hiding under tables as seven to eight shots were fired. One eyewitness said the gunman appeared to have emerged from a makeshift area near the entrance, where there was insufficient security.
Trump praised security forces for their quick and courageous response, saying the gunman had been arrested and that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days.
He also said a Secret Service agent was wounded by close-range gunfire but will make a full recovery. Authorities will soon search the suspect's home in California.
The incident has raised serious concerns about security measures at high-profile events, while investigations are ongoing to determine the perpetrator's exact motives.
