The British prestige "The Guardian" has published the images of some immigrants naked only in their underwear and according to what is reported mistreated, who in low temperatures are forced to cross the border of Serbia towards North Macedonia.
According to "The Guardian", which is based on the reports of human rights organizations, these are evidence of the escalation of mistreatment of immigrants at the European borders, in this case at the Serbian one.
Two videos released to the Guardian by Legis, a North Macedonian NGO, show a row of half-naked men on a stretch of road near the Serbian-North Macedonian border.
Legis says that the videos were filmed by a local near the village of Lojana, near the border with Serbia, and were delivered to him on February 10.
The NGO claims the incident was the second of two abusive and "degrading" reprisals over a 24-hour period, when it claims more than 50 people were forced to strip naked or to their underwear by Serbian authorities before being forcibly returned. in North Macedonia.
Jasmin Redjepi, president of Legis, said the "disturbing and degrading" returns came shortly after an EU-Serbia border cooperation summit aimed at strengthening the Serbian border against people-smuggling operations.
"These incidents occur when the EU prepares restrictions for migrants on the road, and in this case only a few days after an EU-Serbia border cooperation summit. Then we see the direct impact and consequences", said Redjepi.
Although there have been reports of migrants being stripped of their clothes at other European borders, Redjepi says this is the first time it has been reported at the border between Serbia and North Macedonia.
Rados Gjurovic, executive director at the Asylum Protection Center in Serbia, said her staff had seen an increase in return accounts from Serbia to North Macedonia since the beginning of the year. "We can say that it is now a regular practice," he said.
Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe, said: "Recent reports of alleged returns by Serbian police officers at the border with North Macedonia, characterized by ill-treatment and degrading treatment and robbery of migrants, may including those attempting to seek asylum, require prompt and effective investigation by state authorities.”
