"Rama in jail, Berisha in jail": Inside the protest that is shaking Albania
Flight W45048 from Bologna to Tirana is full. On the morning of July 4, as the boarding gate is expected to open, it encounters a variety of people. Elderly couples who do not speak Italian and have come to visit the children of the Albanian diaspora around the world; young Italians of Albanian origin returning to their roots; many tourists, including health tourists: hair transplants, cosmetic surgery, low-cost dentists.
It seems like a day like any other, but today on this flight are also those who are going to the Albanian capital to join the protest. One of those that have been taking place every day in front of the government building for more than a month. This will also be the protest of the great call to the diaspora, which has organized and continues to organize rallies around the world, but now wants to be in the square.
The reason is the sale, announced by the Tirana government as a “strategic investment”, of the island of Sazani (a former military base during the regime and now uninhabited) and of part of the Narta Lagoon and a key area for bird migration, such as flamingos, which have become a symbol of the protest. This has been happening for more than a month, since several activists were raped by the private security company that had begun to install perimeter fences in the project area, and since it became known that the main investor is Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, with his Affinity Partners fund, which has partners in the Persian Gulf countries and highly controversial local partners in Albania.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. White plastic chairs begin to be placed, right in front of the stairs leading to the entrance to the government building, on the city's main boulevard. At the same time, a large crowd gathers in Skanderbeg Square. A little later, people move towards the protest, where a stage has been set up. It functions like Speaker's Corner in London: whoever wants to ask for the floor and speaks. Meanwhile, like before a football match, sales stalls are set up. The most sought-after items are Albanian flags, banners and several other variants: American flags, flags of the KLA, the Albanian armed group of the war in Kosovo, as well as flags of Kosovo itself.

Në shesh janë edhe mbështetësit e liderit të opozitës, Sali Berisha, militantë të Partisë Demokratike, e cila që nga viti 2013 ka humbur terren përballë Edi Ramës, por që ka qeverisur mes skandalesh dhe protestash që shumë njerëz nuk i kanë harruar. Sheshi u lë vend, ndërsa ata qarkullojnë me një arkivol të frikshëm, që sipas tyre simbolizon fundin e regjimit të kryeministrit aktual; i toleron, ai shesh, por nuk ua lë protestën në dorë, duke brohoritur me forcë: “Rama në burg, Berisha në burg”.
“Ky është një revolucion. Nuk jam marrë kurrë me politikë, përkundrazi, gjithmonë i kam qëndruar larg. Këto protesta më kanë bërë të besoj për herë të parë në jetën time se besoj te një lëvizje qytetare”, thotë Erjoni, një arkitekt nga klasa e mesme e Tiranës, i cili për herë të parë del në protestë. Turma rritet pandalshëm, si një lumë. Dëgjohet thirrja “revolucion” dhe bëhen shaka me Edi Ramën, i cili po atë ditë feston ditëlindjen. Mes turmës kalon një grup që mban silueta flamingosh dhe një tortë ironike për kryeministrin.
"Prej më shumë se dhjetë vitesh jemi në luftë kundër Ramës dhe asaj që ai përfaqëson. Por ky është një shesh ndryshe. Ne, si aktivistë të Tiranës, jemi angazhuar për të denoncuar abuzimet e pushtetit, për të mbështetur betejat e komuniteteve lokale të prekura nga këto projekte që fillimisht morën qytetin tonë, më pas bregdetin dhe tani kërcënojnë malet. Nuk arrinim kurrë t'i bashkonim të gjitha këto situata. Sot, përkundrazi, jemi ne, janë komunitetet, është klasa e mesme e lodhur duke parë se pasurohet vetëm klika e oligarkëve pranë Ramës; janë partitë e opozitës së vërtetë, jo si demokratët, që më pas për çështjet kyçe votojnë bashkë me të. Dhe ka edhe nacionalistë, sigurisht, që na quajnë komunistë dhe homoseksualë. Pikërisht për këtë e përshkojmë protestën, sepse duhet të jemi të gjithë bashkë dhe nuk ka më kthim pas", thotë Entenela.
Njerëzit marrin fjalën me radhë për orë të tëra, ndërsa fëmijët vizatojnë në tokë. Grupi nis të lëvizë dhe fillon një marshim nëpër qendrën e qytetit, ndërsa turistë të habitur, me radhë valixhesh me rrota, shikojnë me kureshtje, lexojnë të argëtuar pankartat kundër qeverisë dhe bëjnë pyetje.
Questions that are increasingly irritating Edi Rama. He has declared that there is no turning back. The project will be realized. But he is nervous. First he accused the Serbs of being behind the protests over Kosovo's status; then the Greeks, claiming they were trying to boycott tourism; then the Iranians, angry with Albania for supporting the United States. In fact, for the first time since he came to power in 2013, he is in trouble.
SPAK, the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption, is getting closer and closer to Rama. After convicting the former mayor of Tirana and his closest associate, Erion Veliaj, for serious corruption offences, it has put Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku under investigation for embezzlement of European funds. And it is precisely the European Union, according to sources in the Brussels delegation in Tirana, that is angry with Rama.
"Since the US is the main supporter of SPAK, with the movement for Sazani and by joining the Gaza Board, he is trying to save himself," says K., an investigative journalist who has been dealing with issues related to the prime minister for years.
No, this is not just an environmental battle. "The fact that Rama is seen so close to Trump and investors so compromised with Israel and the entire world of the super-rich has angered everyone, even people very different from each other," says Olsi, a sociologist who has been studying the Rama phenomenon for years.
"Here we are protesting to end the endless transition, which has kept Albania trapped in a power duopoly for more than 30 years. 'Enough Rama and enough Berisha' means enough with corruption and nepotism, enough with the fear of politics. No one knows how this will end, but these protests will forever change the relationship between citizens and the government, which, after the fall of the regime, had never stopped functioning according to a logic of power and fear.
