Iranian state television reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have hit the American aircraft carrier "USS Abraham Lincoln", which has been deployed in the Persian Gulf region since late January.
According to the report, the attack is suspected to have been carried out by military drones, but Iranian television did not provide further details on the extent of the damage or the exact location of the incident.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is one of the United States Navy's main aircraft carriers and part of the Nimitz-class fleet, which constitutes one of the most important components of American naval power. The ship can carry dozens of fighter jets, helicopters and over 5,000 crew members, serving as a mobile base for air and naval operations.
Aircraft carriers are commonly used for the projection of military power in tense regions, as well as for supporting air operations in international conflicts.
However, Iran's claims of attacks on the ship have previously been disputed by US authorities. On Monday, the Revolutionary Guards said they had hit the same aircraft carrier with four missiles, but the US Central Command for the Middle East (CENTCOM) called that statement "false."
