Tensions between Athens and Ankara, Greek coast guard opens fire on Turkish ship

Tensions between Turkey and Greece are back. The Greek Coast Guard has opened fire on a Turkish fishing trawler, which it claims had crossed the maritime border.

According to Greek media, it all started in the evening hours of November 18, when two Turkish fishing boats entered Greek territorial waters, in the wider maritime area of Agathonis, and were fishing, in the presence of two Turkish Coast Guard ships.

Three Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boats rushed to the scene to identify the Turkish fishing vessels and issued repeated visual and audible warnings for the vessels to leave immediately, but with negative results.

Despite recommendations, a Turkish fishing vessel carried out dangerous maneuvers with the risk of colliding with one of three Hellenic Coast Guard patrol vessels.

So, the crew of the Greek patrol boat opened fire. At least that's what the Greeks claim.

Turkish media present a completely different picture of the incident. As they claim, citing statements from its captain, the Turkish fishing vessel "Hasip Reis 3" was in Turkish territorial waters when it received warnings from the Greek Coast Guard. As they claim, immediately after the incident, the Turkish fishermen immediately notified the Turkish authorities, with the Turkish Coast Guard rushing to the scene.
