The US has sent five Air Force F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico, just days after President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 10 stealth fighter jets to the Caribbean territory to bolster operations against drug cartels and amid ongoing tensions with Venezuela.
The F-35 jets landed at the former Roosevelt Roads military base in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, Reuters photographer Ricky Arduengo said. Military helicopters and Osprey aircraft have also been seen in the area in recent days, and on Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a surprise visit to Puerto Rico with the top U.S. general amid rising tensions with Venezuela.
Asked about the aircraft, a Pentagon official said: " We have no change in our military position to announce at this time."
Sources told Reuters last week that the Trump administration had ordered 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico to conduct operations against drug cartels.
Announcing his plans to deploy additional military forces to the region, Trump had said the US government was not talking about regime change in Venezuela.
Last week, US armed forces attacked a speedboat suspected of carrying drugs, killing 11 people on board, who were described as members of the Tren de Aragua gang, a claim denied by Caracas, which said none of the 11 people killed were drug traffickers.
On Saturday, the Venezuelan government denounced the illegal detention of a fishing boat by a US warship.
