German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called Trump's decision to withdraw 5,000 soldiers from US bases on German territory expected, reiterating that US forces in Germany also serve US interests in the wider region.
"For our future missions, we will coordinate closely with the Group of Five (Britain, France, Poland, Italy), we must become more European," Pistorius emphasized.
“The presence of American soldiers in Europe, and especially in Germany, is in our interest and in the interest of the United States. We cooperate closely with the Americans in Ramstein, in Grafenwoehr, in Frankfurt and elsewhere, for peace and security in Europe, for Ukraine and for joint deterrence. The United States also focuses other military functions here, e.g. for its interests in security policy in Africa and the Middle East, ” Pistorius stated a little while ago, commenting on the Pentagon’s announcement of the withdrawal of 5,000 American soldiers stationed at bases in Germany.
"It is clear," Pistorius stressed , "that we must become more European within NATO, so that we can remain transatlantic, in other words, we Europeans must take greater responsibility for our own security."
Germany is on the right track, he noted, referring to the ongoing modernization of the German armed forces: " We are growing. Our armed forces are expanding, we are supplying more equipment faster and we are focusing on innovation, we are building more infrastructure."
"For all future missions, we will coordinate closely with our allies, for example within the Group of Five, i.e. with the United Kingdom, France, Poland and Italy," Boris Pistorius emphasized in his statement.
The Pentagon's announcement comes just a day after Trump sharply criticized Merz, who declared that the United States had been "humiliated" by Iranian negotiators.
The fact that the United States would withdraw troops from Europe, but also from Germany, was expected, the Defense Minister continued, explaining that there are currently reports of 5,000 American soldiers out of a total of almost 40,000 currently stationed in Germany.
In his reactions on social media, Trump described the German chancellor as "doing a terrible job," accusing her of failures in immigration and energy policies.
Trump has also suggested the possibility of withdrawing troops from Italy and Spain, criticizing those countries for their lack of support for operations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He has long been critical of the NATO alliance and the level of contributions of member countries.
In recent months, Germany has significantly increased defense spending, aiming to reach 3.1% of Gross Domestic Product by 2027. However, the decision to withdraw troops has raised concerns, especially in Eastern Europe, where countries remain vulnerable to threats from Russia.
