A large fire has broken out in Italy, on Mount Faeta between the provinces of Pisa and Lucca, forcing the evacuation of around 3,000 residents from endangered areas.
The flames started on the afternoon of April 30 and have spread rapidly on several fronts, including the areas of Santa Maria del Giudice, Asciano and San Giuliano Terme. As a result, around 800 hectares of forest have been burned, while the intervention to contain the fire remains difficult.
Authorities have undertaken evacuations mainly in Asciano and San Giuliano Terme, while the civil protection system has been put on alert to help residents, especially the most vulnerable categories.
Four Canadair aircraft and an S-64 helicopter are involved in the operation, along with firefighting forces on the ground. The situation remains problematic in the Pisa area, while a slight improvement is reported in Lucca.
To ensure safety and not impede the intervention of emergency vehicles, checkpoints have been set up on the roads leading to the affected areas.
