Russia's ambassador to Tehran, Alexey Dedov, has dismissed rumors that Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in Russia for treatment. He notes that the new leader is in Iran and is avoiding public attention.
In a statement to the media, Dedov said that "as the Iranian leadership has repeatedly stated, the new leader is in Iran, but for obvious reasons, he is refraining from appearing in public."
Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, took over the country after his father was killed in an airstrike on February 28. Since being appointed to lead Iran earlier this month, he has not appeared in public or been heard, with his messages broadcast only in written form by state media.
His absence from public view has increased speculation about his health, whereabouts, and the real role he plays in leading the country and the armed forces.
