A close friend and former Clinton family aide, Sidney Blumenthal, said Republicans have "set a trap" for President Donald Trump by enforcing a subpoena on former US President Bill Clinton to testify in connection with Jeffrey Epstein.
He added that Democrats will likely respond by forcing Trump to testify himself when they take control of Congress.
"It has set a precedent ," said Sidney Blumenthal.
He says cabinet members such as Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, and Pam Bondi, the attorney general, could also be called to testify, as could Melania Trump about her previous relationship with Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell.
Blumenthal also comments on reports suggesting that the U.S. Justice Department has withheld documents related to allegations of Trump sexually abusing a minor from the release of the Epstein files. Trump denies all allegations.
" I think what we're seeing in real time is a cover-up of secrets. It was Richard Nixon at Watergate who was said to be 'the cover-up, not the crime' that gets you in the end. And this is a pretty elaborate cover-up ," he concluded.
