Russia has strongly opposed the United States' actions against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, demanding their immediate release from US custody.

Russian Foreign Ministry officials have stated that US actions, including, according to them, military strikes in Venezuela and the capture of Maduro and his wife, are a serious violation of international law and that Maduro must be released immediately.

Russia describes him as a legitimately elected president and demands that the US government reconsider its stance on the issue.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow was " closely monitoring the situation surrounding the trial in the United States of the legally elected and legitimate President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife . "

"We support their immediate release from detention and will comment on all other details as soon as specific information becomes available," Zakharova said, without providing further details about the alleged trial or the ongoing legal process.

Zakharova also described as "an example of disinformation" reports that Russia and the United States had held talks in Geneva on a new nuclear weapons treaty.

"I can confirm that within the framework of the High-Level Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, a conversation took place between officials representing Russia and the United States," the spokeswoman said.

"This was done at the request of the American side to be heard by the Russian side, and nothing more. At the same time, nothing new was said," she added, completely dismissing the idea that these were high-level negotiations or that any significant results came from them.

Zakharova also commented on the European Union's plans to reduce the staff of the Russian Permanent Representation to the EU, calling any claims that the EU has a place at the negotiating table on the Ukraine crisis "baseless."

"The EU's claims to have any place at the negotiating table for Ukraine are baseless," she said, reiterating Moscow's position that only processes under Russian leadership or control can be considered valid.
