The body of Russian athlete Nikolai Svechnikov, who had been missing since August after participating in a swimming competition in the Bosphorus, has been found on the Turkish coast.

On Tuesday morning, Istanbul police found the swimmer's body, while the city prosecutor's office confirmed that the body was found without a head, arms and legs, while wearing a swimsuit. According to information, the body was found between Galatasaray and the Bebek coast, by a passenger boat.

The Russian Consulate General has confirmed after a DNA test that the body found on January 20 belongs to Nikolai Svechnikov, 29, a professional swimming coach, RIA Novosti reports.

The Istanbul governor's office said in a statement that after reviewing security camera footage and data from the swimmer's timer, it appeared he had started the race normally but never reached the finish line.

Svechnikov was competing in the Asia-Europe four-mile swim on August 24, along with more than 2,800 athletes from 81 countries. The Turkish Olympic Committee, which organized the event, had announced that the swimmer had disappeared during the race, and his absence was noticed several hours after it had ended.
