About 200 million Americans have been warned to prepare starting Friday for an extremely severe winter storm, with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, covering much of the country.
Meteorologists are warning of extremely dangerous conditions as the extreme front moves east. The National Weather Service (NWS) said this arctic cold wave will bring sub-zero temperatures, but because of the reel feel it will create an even stronger sense of frost. Its experts speak of a cold that should not be underestimated, but should be seen as “a threat to life from hypothermia and frostbite of exposed skin.”
U.S. transportation officials, including airport authorities in several major cities, have warned of weekend travel disruptions, delays and cancellations. The winter storm is expected to move slowly across the U.S., blanketing cities including Memphis, Nashville, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York with snow.
Several US states have already declared a state of emergency, as the storm is expected to spread over a distance of about 3,000 kilometers, from New Mexico in the southeast to Maine in the northeast over the weekend. One of the main problems is the large power outages, which deprive residents of even heating. US authorities have urged people to stay indoors, if possible, and not to use cars.
In parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, temperatures could drop to minus 45 degrees Celsius, according to the US weather service. The US National Guard has been asked to provide motor vehicles to support emergency services.
