A video showing a man sitting in the middle of a street in Tehran, facing police officers on motorbikes, during recent days of protests is being shared on social media sites, with many users seeing it as an "Iranian Tiananmen".
Sitting on the ground, this man stands motionless, his head bowed, while he covers his face with his T-shirt, while a crowd behind him runs away from the cloud of tear gas.
In front of him stand more than 20 police officers on motorcycles, wearing helmets and dressed in black.
The footage, which was broadcast mainly outside Iran, reminds some users of images of the man standing alone against a column of armored vehicles in Beijing's Tiananmen Square when the June 1989 movement calling for democratic reforms was crushed.
According to verification by Agence France-Presse, the video was posted on Monday at around 3:30 pm (GMT) on the second day of protests against data accuracy. The protests began in Tehran's largest mobile phone market.
AFP confirmed that the video was shot on Joumhouri Street in central Tehran, near the Sarsou shopping mall. The video and photos of the scene have received thousands of "likes", mainly on Instagram.
The footage was also used by many international media outlets to illustrate these spontaneous protest rallies against widespread hyperinflation and the country's deteriorating economic situation.
