The TikTok app was supposed to be banned on January 19, but was temporarily saved through a series of executive orders. Since the signing of the law in 2024 that prohibits the platform from operating in the US unless it is sold to a Western company, there has been complete silence on the negotiations. Until today.
President Donald Trump has publicly hinted that a “rescue” deal has been reached with China, although he did not directly mention TikTok by name. “ We also reached a deal with a ‘certain’ company that the young people in our country really wanted to save. They will be very happy ,” Trump said during a meeting with European authorities on tariff issues. He also added: “ I will be speaking with President Xi on Friday, the relationship remains very strong .”
Commerce Secretary Jamieson Greer confirmed Trump's statement via the Truth Social network, saying: " We have reached an agreement on the complex and sensitive issue of TikTok ." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also expressed the same line: " We have a framework with China on TikTok ," although he clarified that the commercial terms of the agreement will not be made public.
The agreement comes on the same day as the deadline to save the platform expired – Wednesday, September 17. It is possible that there will be an additional extension, albeit a short one, to finalize the terms of the agreement with Beijing. “ Without a clear framework, the deadline would not have been extended ,” Bessent said.
