Strong tremors in Greece, 5.7 magnitude earthquake 'shakes' the island

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the island of Crete this morning, causing concern among residents, but with no reported consequences so far.

According to the Geodynamic Institute, the seismic tremor occurred at 6:18 a.m. and had its epicenter at sea, about 23 kilometers south-southwest of Goudouras, in the Lassithi region, with a depth of 9.7 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt across the island, especially in the eastern area of Crete. Local authorities confirm that, although the shaking was strong and of considerable duration, there are no reports of material damage so far.

"The earthquake was strong and lasted quite a while. This created concern among residents, who are still feeling the tremors, as it is likely that aftershocks are being recorded ," said Sitia Mayor Giorgos Zervakis.

After the main earthquake, at least five aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.5 to 3.8 were recorded, adding to the sense of uncertainty among citizens.

Local authorities and emergency services have been put on alert, while citizens have been asked to remain calm. The mayors of Sitia and Ierapetra have confirmed that they are in constant contact with the relevant institutions.

"The earthquake was felt throughout eastern Crete. We have put civil defense on alert and are waiting to see if there are any problems," said the deputy mayor of Lassithi prefecture, Yiannis Androulakis, adding that the area also has old buildings that will be monitored.
