Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that he has instructed his cabinet to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible, emphasizing that the talks will focus on the complete disarmament of Hezbollah and the establishment of peaceful relations between the two countries.
" In light of Lebanon's repeated requests to open direct negotiations with Israel, yesterday I instructed the cabinet to begin direct negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible ," Netanyahu said in an official statement.
He added that the negotiations will aim to disarm Hezbollah and that Israel welcomes today's call by the Lebanese Prime Minister to demilitarize Beirut.
The office of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, asked by CNN about Netanyahu's comments, said it had "no comment" regarding the Israeli prime minister's statement.
We recall that Israel's withdrawal comes after continued calls by Western countries to stop attacks on Lebanon and Iran's warning to break the ceasefire if the attacks continue.
