Rutte "bows" to Trump: NATO allies reluctant to help US in Iran

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described his meeting with US President Donald Trump as candid.

" As they would say in diplomatic circles, these conversations were frank and open... frank. But that's good. The president, I, we like each other, we've been good friends for many years now, and I would have preferred the conversation to take place at the table. I felt his disappointment that he felt that many allies were not with him," Rutte said after a speech at the Ronald Reagan Institute.

Rutte further stated that the NATO of the future will be an alliance that will not be unhealthily dependent on the US. He adds that the US will have allies that are capable and willing, ready and able to protect the security of the alliance.

" We will build a stronger NATO with members acting quickly to secure the budget and increase their armed forces. Even with this progress, it is clear that we will need more ," he said.

Speaking about Trump's criticism of alliance countries, Rutte said that some NATO members were "a little slow" in offering support to the US in its war on Iran. Rutte justified the fact that Donald Trump kept the plans secret from allies under the pretext of preserving the element of surprise for the initial attacks on Iran.

"To be honest, they were a little surprised too. What I see when I look around Europe today is that the allies are providing a huge amount of support... to ensure that the powerful American military succeeds in denying Iran a nuclear weapon. The allies are doing everything that the United States is asking for," he added.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz blockade, Rutte praised British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for his "leadership" in building a coalition to push for the reopening of the Strait. Rutte added that this is an example of what allies are doing to deal with the situation.

"This is about practical support. This is why we have allies, coalitions... this is not just for NATO countries ," Rutte added.

Finally, Rutte has tried to clarify the situation regarding the use of the term "father" when referring to Donald Trump, saying it is a translation error.
