Tragedy with 22 dead migrants, without water and food for 6 days

According to the Coast Guard, the migrants lost their orientation and were left without food and water for 6 days.

A serious tragedy took place in the maritime area of ​​Ierapetra, where 22 migrants lost their lives. The Coast Guard rescue operation resulted in the rescue of 26 people, while according to survivors' testimonies, another 22 lost their lives during the several-day journey.

According to information from the Coast Guard, the migrants lost their orientation and were left without food and water for 6 days. As a result, out of about 48 people on board, 22 died at sea and then, on the orders of the traffickers, their bodies were thrown into the sea.

"During the midday hours of 26-3-2026, the Port Authorities of Ierapetra and Kalon Limenon were notified by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED) of the Greek Coast Guard, to provide assistance to a vessel in distress with foreign nationals on board, in the maritime zone 52 nautical miles south of Ierapetra.

A FRONTEX ship arrived in the area, identified the dinghy and rescued twenty-six (26) foreign nationals (24 men, 1 woman and 1 minor), who were transported with the assistance of the ship 'ELENI' NP 2097 to the port of Kalon Limenon.

"The survivors were then transported, under the escort of the Special Missions (KEA) units of the Heraklion Central Port Authority and the Phaistos Police, to the port of Heraklion, while two of them were sent by EKAB ambulance to the Heraklion General University Hospital and the 'Venizelio' General Hospital, for medical treatment," an official announcement from the Greek authorities states.

According to the testimonies of the rescued migrants, the vessel had set off in the evening hours of 21.03.2026 from the Tobruk area in Libya, bound for Greece. Preliminary investigations revealed that a total of 48 people were initially on board.

During the journey, the passengers lost their bearings and spent 6 days at sea without water or food. According to survivors, 22 people lost their lives due to the difficult conditions and their bodies were thrown into the sea on the orders of one of the traffickers.

For transportation to Greece, foreign citizens paid the sum of 1,000,000 Bangladeshi taka, 10,000 US dollars, and 12,000 Libyan dinars.

The Central Port Authority of Heraklion, which is conducting preliminary investigations, identified two foreign nationals (from South Sudan), aged 19 and 22, as human traffickers and arrested them for violating Article 83 of Law 3386/2005 “Illegal entry into the country”, Article 25 of Law 5038/2023 “Facilitation”, and Article 45 of the Criminal Code “Collaboration”, as well as for violating Articles 45 (collaboration), 306 (exposure resulting in death) and 302 (negligent homicide) of the Criminal Code.”
