Trump Shocks the World/ 10 Ways the US President is Impacting Everywhere
Donald Trump

From energy prices to politics, the consequences of his actions are visible on many levels.

Donald Trump is quite possibly the most influential American president for the world and for British politics since Ronald Reagan, and perhaps since Harry Truman. His every move is, as he himself would say, “giant,” so much so that it is often forgotten that he is also the president whose actions produce the most unintended consequences.

Like the flapping of a hummingbird's wings causing a storm on the other side of the globe, his movements on the international stage are linked to many of the current developments in British politics. This week provides a clear example. Here are ten ways his influence is felt everywhere:

Fuel price increase

The price of petrol hit £1.50 a litre for the first time in almost two years. Nick Butler, former vice-chairman of BP, warned that Britain could face oil and gas shortages within three weeks. He told Times Radio: “A crisis is coming. Within two to three weeks we could see physical shortages.”

Panic grows
Keir Starmer and his ministers held an emergency meeting with the governor of the Bank of England to discuss a potential crisis that could push oil prices to $150-$200 a barrel. Contingency plans are being considered, including fuel rationing. One minister described the situation as “like 1973.”

Higher inflation and lower economic growth
The OECD estimates that the energy crisis in the Middle East will affect Britain more than any other G20 country. The forecast for economic growth in 2026 has been reduced to 0.7%, while inflation is expected to reach 4%.

Starmer's domestic problems are indirectly linked to Trump
British politics has been engulfed by the Morgan McSweeney phone scandal. Some messages with Peter Mandelson may have been lost. Mandelson was also appointed because of his ability to manage relations with Trump, a decision that could now have political consequences.

Starmer either did not foresee the situation or misrepresented it.
The Prime Minister stated that it was impossible to foresee the request for McSweeney's phone. However, given that he himself has used mechanisms to publish documents, this is considered a controversial position.

War and politics intertwined.
Trump offered Iran a deal with 15 demands, including a ban on uranium enrichment and the closure of nuclear facilities. In return, he promised sanctions relief. After it was rejected, he threatened military action.

Politics and economics are closely linked.
Some British officials believe that Trump's statements are deliberately influencing oil prices and financial markets, also reflecting personal economic interests.

The perception that Trump is averse to escalation
The theory known as "TACO" (Trump Always Chickens Out) returned to the discussion, suggesting that he avoids protracted conflicts due to domestic political pressure.

Uncertainty about future actions
Relations between the White House and the British government are at a low ebb. One British official says: “We wake up every morning not knowing what he has said or done.”

A defining moment for the future
Starmer calls the situation a moment that will shape the coming decades. Trump's influence is described as that of a once-in-a-century president. /Adapted from The Spectator /
