A tragedy has occurred off the coast of Tunisia, in the search and rescue (SAR) zone in the Mediterranean, where two children have lost their lives and another person is missing. The incident occurred when a boat carrying migrants capsized during a rescue operation undertaken by a merchant ship.
The news was made public by the non-governmental organization Sea Watch, which through a post on the social network "X" denounces the event and the way the situation was handled.
According to a statement from Sea Watch, on Monday their surveillance aircraft, Seabird 2, spotted a ship with over 90 people on board, which had been at sea for three days. Although an alert was issued for help, Frontex arrived on the scene only six hours later, did not intervene and then left.
Meanwhile, the merchant ship Port Fukuka attempted to intervene to rescue the migrants, but during this operation the boat capsized. Two children have died and one person is still missing. The survivors are currently still on board the merchant ship, which has not received permission to enter any Italian port.
Sea Watch has raised concerns that there is a real risk that the Libyan coastguard will take over the return of migrants to Libya – a place where they face great danger. Meanwhile, the rescue ship Aurora, owned by Sea Watch, would have been able to intervene, but according to them, the Italian authorities are keeping it blocked in the port of Lampedusa without valid reasons.
