Air tragedy in India, government orders strict checks of entire Boeing 787 fleet

The Indian government has ordered detailed checks on all Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, the same model as the one that crashed last week in the city of Ahmedabad, causing a tragedy with over 240 fatalities.

According to authorities, the cause of the accident appears to be related to a defect in the pilot's seat, which caused a loss of control immediately after takeoff.

So far, eight such aircraft have been inspected, while the possibility of temporarily grounding the entire fleet of 34 Boeing 787 aircraft operated by Indian companies, 33 of which belong to Air India and one IndiGo, is being considered.

The Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority of India has ordered special maintenance checks for all Boeing 787-8/9 aircraft equipped with GEnx engines, including analysis of takeoff parameters, electronic engine system tests and fuel supply checks.

Although the planes are not officially grounded, the possibility of a temporary suspension of flights is not ruled out if it is confirmed that the defect is repeatable in the existing fleet.

The Dreamliner, with 242 passengers on board and bound for London's Gatwick Airport, began to lose altitude just moments after takeoff, crashing into several buildings near the airport, a tragedy that has once again put the safety of Boeing aircraft in the spotlight.

Aviation officials confirmed that the last words of the captain of Air India Flight 171, seconds before it crashed near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, were a clear emergency signal: “We are not achieving liftoff… we are falling… Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!”
