President Joe Biden had harsh words for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during talks with him in recent weeks, expressing frustration at his inability to convince the latter to change Israel's military tactics in the Gaza Strip.
Biden sees Netanyahu as a major obstacle to efforts for a truce, according to five sources who spoke to NBC News.
Biden reportedly said he is trying to get Israel to agree to a ceasefire, but Netanyahu is "making his life hell" and it is impossible to negotiate with him.
The sources said that on three occasions Biden called Netanyahu a "crap" and on other occasions called him "this guy".
Joe Biden urged Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday not to proceed with a military operation in Rafah, inside the Gaza Strip, "without a credible and feasible plan" to protect the population, the White House said.
"During their telephone conversation, the American president reiterated his view that a military operation in Rafah should not be carried out without a credible and workable plan to ensure the safety of the more than one million people who have taken refuge there," he said . the US government in a statement.
Biden's phone call with Netanyahu came days after the US president said Israel's military response to Gaza was "excessive".
