Dear Principal, With all due respect to the world, America will be a gerontocracy. The term itself is not 100% negative, but it raises the issue of the upcoming presidential election with two candidates who are clearly older.
The same electoral campaign could be played on "medical records". It is strange how what is perhaps mistakenly considered the largest democracy on the planet cannot and will not be represented by a younger ruling class.
When Americans go to the polls to elect a new president next November, Joe Biden will be 82 years old and Donald Trump 78.
They will almost certainly be (barring unlikely twists and turns) the candidates the Democratic and Republican parties will lean on.
A challenge that will involve very old leaders and the "age factor" will be used freely in the electoral campaign.
Of course, there is nothing to complain about: if a person, even thanks to the general extension of life expectancy, feels capable of facing such a difficult task as that of leading the world's main superpower, it is right that he should have the possibility.
Being young cannot be the only criterion in choosing the class in power, in politics and in the economy. But the opposite cannot happen either: we cling to old leaders because we are unable to promote new ones. America has always done this throughout its history, bringing forth original and surprising personalities. What is particularly surprising is that the Democratic Party, already concerned about the health of its president, did not try another candidate. A controversial argument already widely used by Trump.
But Donald himself is suffering the law of retaliation in his field.
Republican primary challenger Nikki Haley has already made the case: Trump is too old to be president. He also questioned his mental clarity after confusing him with Nancy Pelosi in a speech.
In short, we are already in for a taste of what will happen in the heat of the election campaign. But the last thing we should hope for is to spend time talking about health issues rather than the big global issues at stake./ Corriere della Sera
