Trump sends National Guard to Portland: We will use full force against domestic

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has ordered Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, to deploy the National Guard to Portland, Oregon, to confront what he described as "domestic terrorists."

In a post on his social network Truth, Trump described the city as "war-torn" and said troops would have the right to use "full force" to protect ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) facilities, which he said were "under attack by Antifa and other terrorist groups."

The decision marks an expansion of the president's controversial use of federal force in various American cities. Tensions have been particularly high since the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, an event that Trump used to intensify rhetoric against what he calls the "radical left," which he holds responsible for political violence in the country.

Earlier, Trump had described life in Portland as "like living in hell" and warned of the possibility of sending in federal troops - a scenario that is now expanding to other cities, including Chicago and Baltimore.

Meanwhile, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson rejected federal intervention, saying his city has managed protests and sporadic episodes of violence without the need for outside troops. “Like many other mayors, I didn’t ask for this intervention, and I don’t need it,” he said.

ICE facilities in Portland have often been the subject of protests, which in some cases have degenerated into violent clashes, in which several federal agents have been injured.

The move follows similar cases over the summer, when Trump sent the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., citing the need to “maintain public order.” In Tennessee, authorities in Memphis are also preparing to deploy troops, a move confirmed by Republican Governor Bill Lee as part of a crackdown on crime.
