Lavrov's open threat: Russia ready to clash with NATO
In a defiant speech before the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov openly threatened NATO and the EU.
He dismissed accusations that Moscow is planning to attack NATO or European Union countries. Lavrov stressed that Russia does not and has never had such intentions, but added in a stern tone: “ But any aggression against my country will receive a decisive response. Let there be no doubt about this in NATO and the EU .”
After this warning, Lavrov also touched on the conflict in Ukraine, where he reiterated that Russia remains open to negotiations. " As President Vladimir Putin has often said, Russia is and remains ready for talks on eliminating the root causes of the conflict. Our security and the rights of Russians and Russian-speakers in the territories under Kiev's control must be fully guaranteed. Only on this basis can we discuss security guarantees for Ukraine as well ," he declared.
In the first part of his speech, Lavrov focused on the Middle East. He condemned Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel, but added that " there is no justification for the brutal massacres of Palestinians " that followed. He further criticized Israel's plans to annex the West Bank and called the efforts of some states to recognize Palestine at the time of the UN vote belated.
The Russian foreign minister also spoke about Iran, calling the attempt by Western countries to reimpose sanctions on Tehran "illegal."
Lavrov's speech confirms Moscow's strategy of using the UN rostrum as a stage to criticize the West, offer "readiness for dialogue" in Ukraine, but at the same time not give up direct threats against NATO and the EU.
