United States President Donald Trump declared that the end of the war is near, during an exclusive interview with the American media outlet PBS, where he spoke in detail for the first time about Washington's strategic choices in Iran.
Trump said the military cost to the US is "negligible," but stressed that Iran is not yet ready to sit at the negotiating table.
In the interview, the US president also explained why military operations have not targeted certain non-military infrastructure.
He specifically mentioned Khark Island, an important hub for Iranian oil exports.
" Khark Island is out of action, except for the pipelines, which I decided not to hit. I didn't want to destroy them, because it would take years to rebuild them. But I've made it clear: if necessary, we will hit it and completely destroy it ," Trump said.
The US president added that his administration has also avoided hitting some infrastructure in Tehran, so as not to cause long-term consequences for the country's reconstruction.
" I left a lot of infrastructure in Tehran because, if you destroy it, rebuilding takes years. I can knock down power stations in an hour, but then it would be a multi-year process of rebuilding. It would be a trauma, so I try to postpone that ," he said.
Speaking about the economic impact of ending the conflict, Trump also predicted major changes in global energy markets.
" When this is all over, oil prices will drop like a rock ," the US president declared in the PBS interview.
