A US Navy warship believed to be carrying thousands of Marines and sailors to the Middle East is approaching the Strait of Malacca near Singapore, according to maritime tracking data.
The amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was spotted near Singapore, on the southwestern edge of the South China Sea, according to AIS data analyzed by CNN. Activating these signals in areas with heavy maritime traffic is considered standard practice for navigational safety.
According to three officials familiar with the plans, the ship is transporting troops from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU), a rapid reaction force of about 2,200 people based in Okinawa, Japan. The Pentagon has ordered the deployment of this unit to the Middle East, without giving details of the exact destination or mission.
A MEU unit consists of four main components: command, ground forces, air component, and logistical support. These units are typically used for evacuation operations, amphibious interventions, and rapid military missions that require deployment from sea to land.
The USS Tripoli, about 260 meters long and with a displacement of 45,000 tons, functions as a small aircraft carrier. It can carry F-35 fighter jets, helicopters and landing craft for field operations.
