The latest executive order from the White House (over 200 of which have been signed by Trump since the beginning of the year) is a warning and a restriction for American states and at the same time a move to make the country more competitive on the most important technological and economic fronts of the moment.
The president wants to create a federal standard for the development, but above all the regulation, of artificial intelligence. The goal is to block many laws that are proposed and written at the state level. " We want to have a central source of approval," Trump told reporters as he signed the executive order.
He was joined by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and AI consultant David Sacks, who supports the initiative and describes it as a means to counter more "onerous" local regulations. This decision, therefore, addresses the needs of AI companies, which will thus not be forced to comply with many of the regulations currently being produced: "You're not going to get approval anyway if you have to go to 50 states," Trump added.
The goal is therefore to free the various companies OpenAI, Meta and Google from the restrictions that each state government can impose on the development and use of their models. These models, according to the executive order, should be subject only to federal regulation. However, this regulation, at this time, does not exist. On both sides, Republicans and Democrats are emphasizing the urgency of understanding how to control a technology that can have and is having harmful effects and serious consequences. Big Tech has been close to the Trump administration since day one - their leaders were all in the front row on inauguration day - and Trump considers them allies to be protected. Because for him, their technology represents almost a weapon to expand American hegemony and power. Against a competitive China, which is undermining the supremacy of American innovation. And against European regulations, which on the other side of the Atlantic are seen more as a threat than an opportunity.

Their conviction about the need to intervene in the sector is also reflected in their stance on Trump's executive order limiting the powers of US states to regulate AI: "The attorneys general argue that broad federal oversight would undermine states' ability to respond quickly and effectively to emerging risks associated with AI. They urge Congress to work with states to develop well-thought-out federal regulations, rather than impose a blanket ban that could jeopardize public safety and innovation."
