Donald Trump has hit a snag when it comes to his plan to bring the Ukrainian opposition back to power.
Former president Petro Poroshenko and Yulia Tymoshenko have stated that elections should only be held after peace is established, rejecting Trump's demands.
Their statements come after Donald Trump called President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a "dictator" for not holding presidential elections, a narrative often used by the Kremlin in an attempt to delegitimize the Ukrainian leader.
Representatives of Trump's circle held talks with Poroshenko and Tymoshenko on Wednesday, but statements from the opposition in Ukraine suggest that the leaders disagree with the US plan to hold elections during wartime.
Ukraine's constitution does not allow for elections to be held while the country is under martial law, and there would be major challenges in holding the vote for citizens living in occupied territories and for soldiers on the front lines.
