As peace talks between Iran and the US take place in Pakistan on Saturday, President Donald Trump has not spared threats towards Tehran.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said the United States is prepared to resume military strikes against Iran if peace talks fail to produce an agreement, following a temporary two-week ceasefire.
Trump stated that US warships are being re-equipped with advanced weapons systems, considering the possibility of resuming operations against Iran if negotiations fail.
The statements came shortly after US Vice President JD Vance left for Islamabad, where he will participate in negotiations with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the US president's son-in-law, aimed at reaching a final peace agreement.
"We'll know in about 24 hours if the talks are going to work," Trump said, expressing reservations about the Iranian side's stance. As he argued, the US has already taken steps to strengthen its naval forces with advanced military equipment, adding that, if the negotiations fail, these weapons will be used.
Iran is expected to be represented at the talks by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, according to reports. During previous contacts before the war, Tehran had stressed that it considers uranium enrichment to be its inalienable right.
Trump expressed doubts about the intentions of the Iranian leadership, noting that the positions presented in private talks differ from public statements.
"We're dealing with people who we don't know if they're telling the truth or not," Trump said, adding "in front of us, they say they're getting rid of all the nuclear weapons, that they're all gone. And then they come out in front of the press and say, 'no, we want to get rich.' So we're going to find out."
