Former President Donald Trump, who has refused to debate other Republican presidential candidates, said he would like to face off against President Joe Biden immediately.
"I would like to debate him now, because we have to face each other in the debate. We have to debate for the good of the country," Mr. Trump said on a radio show hosted by conservative analyst Dan Bongino.
Asked by reporters during a visit to Las Vegas on Monday about former President Trump's debate invitation, Democrat Biden responded by giving him the right.
"If I were in his place, I would also like a debate. He has nothing else to do."
Although leading the race among Republicans to challenge Mr. Biden in the Nov. 5 election, Mr. Trump has yet to secure his party's nomination and has declined a debate invitation from his Republican rival Nikki Haley.
In response to Mr Trump's comments, Ms Haley's campaign said in a statement that he was "afraid" to confront her.
"Now is the time for Trump to find the courage to agree to a debate with Nikki Haley. Nikki is ready to present her accomplishments and vision for a strong and proud America against (former President ) Trump," said Mrs. Haley's campaign spokeswoman, Olivia Perez-Cubas.
Mr Trump's comments reflect a desire to focus on a possible election showdown with Mr Biden, who on Saturday won the South Carolina Democratic primary and is expected to win his party's nomination.
Ms. Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and former United Nations ambassador during Mr. Trump's administration, is trailing him in opinion polls but has vowed to continue to challenge him.
Former President Trump and President Biden debated twice during the 2020 election race. A third debate was canceled after Mr. Trump contracted COVID-19 and declined to participate in a virtual debate. Traditionally, three presidential debates are held before the elections in the USA. / VOA
