Japan's nuclear power plants were not damaged by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said it was in contact with the country's government regarding the earthquake in Russia's far east.
"Initial reports indicate that there is no impact on the safety of nuclear power plants along the Pacific coast," the IAEA said.
He added that the discharge of water from the power plants had been stopped in accordance with safety protocols.
