US President Donald Trump has revealed a private message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, while previously he also published a communication from French leader Emmanuel Macron.
In his message to Trump, Rutte praised the recent activity in Syria, while emphasizing that he will use his appearances in Davos to highlight the US's work in Gaza and Ukraine.
He added that he is committed to finding a "way forward" with Greenland.
"President, dear Donald – what you accomplished today in Syria is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza and in Ukraine.
I am committed to finding a way forward on the Greenland issue. I look forward to seeing you.
"Yours, Mark," Rutte writes to Trump.
Despite resistance from European NATO allies, Donald Trump is not wavering from his intention to annex Greenland. On the eve of attending the Davos Economic Forum in Switzerland on Wednesday, the head of the White House reiterated that the United States must have the island in the Arctic, since others cannot defend it.
He expressed confidence that the Europeans would not resist for long, while reconfirming his willingness to impose 10 percent tariffs on the eight countries that oppose the acquisition of Greenland.
"Well, I don't think they'd object too much. Listen, we have to have Greenland. They can't defend it. Denmark is a wonderful nation. And I know the leaders, they're very good people, but they don't even go there. And, you know, just because a ship went there 500 years ago and then left, that doesn't give you ownership. We've had tremendous success, and I've done more for NATO than anyone else. I don't think we would have NATO right now. We'll see how it goes. But Greenland is very important," Trump said.
