US President Donald Trump has reacted in harsh tones to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, deepening the clash over the approach to Iran and international negotiations.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump directly attacked the German leader, stating that he “has no idea what he’s talking about.” The backlash came after Merz suggested that Iran was coming on stronger than expected and that the United States was not presenting a convincing strategy in the negotiations.
Trump made it clear that the nuclear issue remains an absolute red line. “If Iran had nuclear weapons, the entire world would be hostage,” he wrote, adding that he is taking actions that, in his opinion, should have been taken long ago by other leaders.
He extended the criticism to Germany, linking its stance to the country's performance.
“ German Chancellor Friedrich Merz thinks it’s okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about! If Iran had a nuclear weapon, the whole world would be hostage. I’m doing something with Iran now that other countries, or other presidents, should have done long ago. No wonder Germany is doing so badly, both economically and in other ways ,” Trump wrote.
On the other hand, Chancellor Friedrich Merz had warned about the complexity of the situation with Iran, arguing that the Iranian leadership is putting pressure on the US and is showing itself to be a skilled negotiator. He also stressed that experience in conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq shows that entering a crisis is easier than finding a way out.
Merz had raised questions about the clarity of the American strategy, noting that it remains unclear how Washington intends to get out of this situation.
The public clash between the two leaders highlights differences in the transatlantic approach to Iran and comes at a time of high geopolitical tensions, with a direct impact on international security and energy markets.
