The protest of a generation that no longer accepts to wait
Environmental destruction, land exploitation, American oligarchs, inequality, corruption, uncontrolled tourism, emigration: the mass protests that continue to flood Albania encompass all the most pressing issues of our time.
A people who until recently seemed resigned to a perpetual transition from Europe's most closed and brutal dictatorship to the current playground of resorts, concreted coastlines and low-cost coastal tourism are telling us something very clear: "Albania is not for sale and Edi Rama must go home."
Thus, the Flamingo Revolution has passed its first month of relentless protests. Despite the postcard image now etched in our imagination – very different from the boats full of people fleeing in 1991 – Albania remains a place to escape from. “ Most Albanians cannot afford to buy or rent an apartment: in the last fifteen years of Rama’s government, the economy has been driven by construction and tourism, fueled mainly by drug money laundering ,” explains Redi Muçi, the only MP from the Together Movement.
But let's take a step back: why the "Flamingo Revolution"? " Last May, some heavy machinery entered the Vjosa-Narta protected area without warning and started construction. On May 16, we organized the first demonstration. The Narta Lagoon is home to thousands of flamingos and, from a biodiversity perspective, is one of the most important areas in all of Albania, " explains Aleksander Trajce, president of the Protection and Conservation of the Natural Environment of Albania, the oldest and most important NGO for environmental protection in the country.

We are in Zvërnec, one of the municipalities closest to the construction site, and on May 30, after several local demonstrations, the conflict escalates: a resident trying to cross the barbed wire is brutally beaten by one of the private security guards guarding the perimeter, while the State Police observe the scene without intervening. The entire event was filmed by Emiljando Kita, a member of the Lëvizja Bashke: " I could have helped him by moving him away from the police fire, but I filmed the scene for all Albanians to see ."
Ndër faktorët që nxisin përshkallëzimin është dhëndri i Donald Trump, Jared Kushner, i cili, së bashku me gruan e tij, Ivanka, po përpiqet të blejë ishullin e Sazanit – pikërisht përballë lagunës Vjosë-Nartë – për të ndërtuar një hotel të madh luksoz. Historia groteske se si vajza e Trump zbuloi ishullin dhe vendosi ta blinte atë, duke notuar atje nga jahti i saj, ka zemëruar shqiptarët.
Ky rast është një shembull i një politike më të gjerë, në të cilën kufijtë e ruajtjes së natyrës janë shtyrë prapa për t'i bërë vend "investimeve strategjike". "Ata thonë se nuk ka projekt, por ka një leje zhvillimi: si mund të ishte dhënë pa pasur një projekt? Nuk ka transparencë. Ne e mbështesim këtë dhe të gjitha investimet strategjike, por duam të dimë detajet dhe ndikimin që do të ketë", shpjegon Besart Xhaferri, anëtar i Parlamentit për Partinë Demokratike. Ndërkohë, Prokuroria Speciale kundër Korrupsionit dhe Krimit të Organizuar (SPAK) ka nisur tashmë hetimet për zhvillimet në Zvërnec: dyshohet për pastrim parash.
Një revoltë ndërpartiake
Sipas antropologut Nebi Bardhoshi, pronat luksoze nuk janë thjesht projekte zhvillimi, por pjesë e një modeli të korruptuar dhe strukturor: "Modeli i vendpushimeve bregdetare dhe rrokaqiejve në Tiranë ka çuar në rritje të çmimeve dhe qasje të kufizuar në mallrat e zakonshme. Punësimi i krijuar ka qenë i papërfillshëm."
Për këtë arsye, sipas Bardhoshit, Zvërneci është bërë një qendër pakënaqësie, mungese transparence dhe politikash që janë në kundërshtim me interesin kolektiv të natyrës dhe njerëzve: "Kjo është arsyeja pse kërkesat e shprehura gjatë Revolucionit të Flamingove janë thellësisht anti-establishment dhe transversale."
Nuk është rastësi që brohoritjet i drejtohen si Kryeministrit aktual, ashtu edhe udhëheqësit historik të krahut të djathtë. "Rama në burg, Berisha në burg" është një nga sloganet më të zakonshme. "Dyshja Rama-Berisha është shënjestra e vërtetë e këtyre protestave", thotë Redi Muçi. "Për vite me radhë, qeveria e ka trajtuar vendin si pronë private, të cilën mund ta shesë dhe ta shkatërrojë sipas dëshirës. Kur qeveria nuk vepron më në interesin më të mirë të popullit, nuk kemi zgjidhje tjetër veçse të bllokojmë gjithçka", thotë aktivistja Elsa Paja nga rrugët e Tiranës.
Sukseset e para
Më 17 qershor, Parlamenti Evropian miratoi një rezolutë mbi Raportin e Komisionit Evropian për vitin 2025 për Shqipërinë, duke u bërë thirrje autoriteteve shqiptare të revokojnë ndryshimet në ligjin për zonat e mbrojtura dhe të vendosin një moratorium të menjëhershëm për lejet e reja dhe projektet e zhvillimit në zonat e prekura.
While Prime Minister Rama tried to downplay the scale of the unrest on his social media channels, tensions are rising in the Albanian capital. Tensions have been escalating since July 2, after several MPs were pelted with eggs as they left Parliament. The police intervention was massive: 19 arrests were made, two of whom remain under house arrest. The city responded with its biggest-ever day of protests, helped by a large diaspora presence and a delegation of MEPs who joined the protesters in the streets.
Dutch MEP Tineke Strik stated that, despite the meeting with the Minister of the Environment, Sofjan Jaupaj, no guarantees were given that activities in the area would be suspended. And the first political shocks did not take long: Socialist MP Marjana Koçeku left Edi Rama's party: " Under these conditions, there can be neither stability nor cohesion with the people I represent ".
