There have been a number of international infrastructure projects in the news this week, with a strong focus on excavation.
Plans have resurfaced for a $20 trillion transatlantic tunnel that could theoretically connect London and New York in just one hour using vacuum tube technology.
That's 3,000 miles of digging, not to mention that Newsweek estimates that this project could take the better part of a millennium if construction were to proceed at the same pace as the Europe's Channel Tunnel. However, this remains just a vision yet.
As for the plans that are actually happening, Norway last month opened its Rogfast project, which promises to be the longest and deepest road tunnel in the world. Elsewhere in northern Europe, the world's longest road and rail tunnel, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Denmark and Germany, is scheduled to open in 2029.
Even Southern Europe is not ashamed of a project or two. Construction of a new bridge connecting Greece and Turkey may be closer to starting, the Greek Reporter said on Friday.
Near the western edge of Europe, the UK is busy building one of the world's most expensive rail projects, known as HS2 (High Speed 2), which now costs $416 million per mile. However, many people think it is meaningless.
It comes years after the UK re-launched plans for what would have been one of the world's most ambitious bridges linking Britain and Ireland. It only had to cover a stretch of 12 miles, but the waters were too deep to submerge the Eiffel Tower. Then there was the matter of all the radioactive waste and unexploded ordnance. Unsurprisingly, the plans were scrapped.
