
Igor Kirillov was a senior Russian general and head of the country's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense Forces (NBC).
Kirillov was appointed head of the force in April 2017. According to Russian state media Tass, he attended the High Command Military Chemical Defense School in Kostroma.
The general served in various roles in the Russian military related to hazardous materials, including the Directorate of the Chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Corps.
Yesterday, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) convicted Kirillov in absentia of using chemical weapons banned in Ukraine, the Kyiv Independent reported. The SBU has claimed that Russia has used chemical weapons nearly 5,000 times under Kirillov's leadership.
Kirillov was sanctioned by the UK, Foreign Affairs and Canada, among others, for his role in Russia's war in Ukraine.
