The local community of Alexandria is shocked after the death of the 46-year-old policeman.
He was seriously injured after a traffic accident that happened early in the morning in the city of Imathia, in Greece.
The police officer, who served in the Alexandria department, breathed his last in the line of duty while patrolling on his service motorcycle downtown.
Shortly after 08:30, the 46-year-old's motorcycle collided with a car driven by a woman, causing him to go off the road, crawl on the ground and collide with an electric pole.
According to the information, the two vehicles involved were moving at low speed as a public market was operating at the scene, but the driver of the vehicle blocked their way and the police officer lost control of the engine.
The policeman hit the pole with his head and although he was wearing a helmet, the collision was fatal.
The 46-year-old father of four young children was a particularly beloved member of Alexandria society and had been elected mayor of the local community of Loutro, where he lived with his family.
The dead body of the deceased policeman has been handed over for necropsy, while preliminary investigations into the circumstances of the fatal traffic accident are being carried out by the Alexandria Police.
