The Biden administration announced Tuesday that it will send an additional $250 million in weapons and ammunition to Ukraine as part of its continued support for Kiev's counteroffensive.
According to the State Department, the weapons will be drawn from existing US stockpiles and will include mine-clearing equipment, artillery and rocket weapons, ambulances and medical equipment, among other spare parts and items.
" The package will help Ukrainian forces on the battlefield and support its air defenses as Russia continues to launch brutal, brutal attacks against the people of Ukraine, including attacks this past week," the House spokeswoman said on Tuesday . White, Karine Jean-Pierre, reports the Associated Press.
The State Department said the package contained AIM-9M air defense missiles, High Mobility Artillery Missile System munitions, 155 mm and 105 mm artillery rounds and more than 3 million small arms rounds.
The U.S. would have already run out of funds for the year to provide additional backup equipment to Ukraine, but earlier this year it realized the Pentagon had overstated the equipment it had already sent, which freed up an additional $6.2 billion in funding.
Ukraine has already received more than $43 billion from the US since Russia invaded last year. These funds have provided weapon systems such as howitzers and millions of rounds of ammunition to fight against the much larger Russian army. Due to the intense and bloody ground war, now in its 18th month, most of the ammunition and weaponry has already been used up.
